VMware clouds -- ready or not, here they come. Also on InfoWorld, read about VMware's presidential shake-up and learn about their four co-presidents. We want to provide you with an important update about the vCenter Lab Manager product.
As customers continue to expand the use of virtualization both inside the datacenter and outside the firewall, we are focusing on delivering infrastructure solutions that can support these expanded scalability and security requirements. As a result of this focus, we have decided to discontinue additional major releases of vCenter Lab Manager. Lab Manager 4 will continue to be supported in line with our General Support Policy through May 1st, As VMware continues to invest in our customers' journey to cloud computing, we are focusing on delivering secure multi-tenant enterprise hybrid clouds with VMware vCloud Director.
The company hadn't released a major update since July when it launched vCenter Lab Manager 4. It was evident the two products were very similar in nature and had quite a bit of feature overlap. Only one could survive, and we all knew which one that would be. The application level interrelationship between each Lab Manager virtual machine and other Lab Manager virtual machines. For the purposes of this document, a small transition project is assumed.
The transition project is divided in to phases: 1. Discovery — Building a project team, analyzing the source and target environments, identifying stakeholders, and committing to the transition. Prerequisites — Building the target infrastructure, gathering the required information, breaking the implementation in to consumable transition work units, and preparing the target infrastructure.
Transition — For each transition work unit: a. Execute the transition plan. Perform validation testing. Decommissioning — Dismantle the legacy Lab Manager environment, and recycle the physical assets and VMware licenses.
Breaking the transition tasks in to consumable transition work units is key to maintaining organization and gaining parallelization through infrastructure resource scheduling. A transition work unit should consist of a set of source virtual machines to be transitioned to gether due to an identified boundary such as: Functional technical requirements — A set of virtual machines which are highly interrelated.
One or a few stakeholders own a collection of virtual machines perhaps an entire business unit and the downtime for those systems must be coordinated. For example, moving the systems supporting the HR department during the night when the applications supporting the department are not used. A collection based on the number of virtual machines or s to rage footprint if the virtual machines are unrelated. For example, based on the initial testing of bandwidth, latency, and s to rage footprint, select the number of virtual machines to transition.
To increase accuracy and reduce duplication of tasks, a single set of transition team members should work on each transition work unit. Each transition team can work independently on their transition work unit, but can still coordinate through the Project Manager as they compete for infrastructure resources such as s to rage network bandwidth and access to the vCloud Resource vCenter Servers.
If more than one team is performing the transitions, the transition work unit concept leads to a natural parallelization for the transition efforts. Note Transitions using this method should remain serialized within each transition work unit, but transition work units themselves can be performed in parallel.
Identify the key member of the pilot team to lead the effort for the transition. It is essential that this team member be familiar with all the aspects of the transition work unit. As the pilot team executes the tasks associated with the transition work unit, the team members record, document, and communicate the proceedings.
After the pilot team has completed the transition, they can document the process, record the level of effort to complete the transition work unit, and perform knowledge transfer sessions for other potential transition work unit teams to enable parallel execution of transition work units. Any exceptions discovered in the process should be identified by the transition work unit team and accounted for when calculating the level of effort to complete the entire transition project.
Transitioning a Work Unit : Implementation 3. At a high level, those tasks include: 1. Verify that the Lab Manager servers see the new datas to res and are capable of accessing them. Consolidate a Lab Manager virtual machine and select a datas to re on which to s to re the consolidated virtual machine.
Use a round robin method for selecting the destination datas to re to hold the virtual machine. The destination datas to re must be accessible by the vCloud environment organization virtual datacenter as it will become the final location of the virtual machine after it is imported in to the vCloud environment.
On the vCloud environment Resource vCenter Server, use the datas to re browser to locate and import the virtual machine. On import, do not place the virtual machine in a resource pool. Use the Python to ol provided by VMware to perform the import of the virtual machine in to a vApp in the vCloud environment.
Verify the VMware Tools version. Update as necessary. Add NICs as required and attach them to the appropriate networks. For fenced configurations, decide if you will continue to use fencing, or implement vApp Networks with single external network connections and routing rules. Organization virtual datacenters.
Organization networks. Organization virtual datacenter has been assigned a network pool. Organization administra to rs and users. To achieve this, the datas to res underlying the vCloud environment must be mounted on the ESX hosts supporting the Lab Manager environment. This is risky in a vCloud environment supporting existing cus to mers, and in that case an alternate procedure requiring multiple copy operations becomes necessary.
Take care to avoid having the Lab Manager environment place extraneous data on the vCloud datas to res. To achieve this, use a round-robin method to select the destination datas to re on which to consolidate a virtual machine. In the left pane of vCenter Lab Manager , click All Configurations and verify that the virtual machine to be consolidated is in an Undeployed status. Position the cursor over the undeployed configuration and click Open. Click the New Datas to re drop-down menu and select the target datas to re where you want to s to re the consolidated virtual machine.
Use the round-robin method when selecting a target datas to re on which the virtual machine will be consolidated. Verify the connectivity of the target datas to re and click OK to proceed with the virtual machine consolidation.
Click the Configuration tab. Under Hardware, select S to rage. Under Datas to res, right-click the datas to re containing the virtual machine to be imported and select Browse Datas to re. In this example, the virtual machine was prefixed with a numeric ID number. The cluster must contain the resource pool that backs the target organization virtual datacenter. Select the cluster again.
Do not select a resource pool. Validate the Add to Inven to ry information: a. This name is used in the next step to import the virtual machine in to the vCloud environment. The Folder field should display the name of the vCenter datacenter.
Verify that the virtual machine has been imported to vCenter and that it is not in located in a resource pool. It is possible to perform this import using the vCloud Direc to r user interface; however, this requires a two-step process and two additional copies of the virtual machine which consumes additional time and resources.
The Python script performs the operation rapidly with no additional copy operations required. Run the import. Verify that a new vApp with the expected name has been added to the appropriate organization and organization virtual datacenter in vCloud Direc to r. To change the ownership of the vApp 1. Position the cursor over the vApp, right-click, and select Change Owner.
Select the new organization owner. Verify that the owner has changed. To verify vApp leasing Right-click the imported vApp, select Properties, and verify the information. If it is not, follow standard procedures to install VMware Tools using the vCloud Direc to r user interface. Open the vApp and select the Virtual Machines tab. Right-click the virtual machine inside the vApp and select Properties. Note the computer name and the version of VMware Tools. To set the operating system and computer name 1.
Select the operating system family and operating system. Type the hostname of the system in the Computer Name field. Click OK. To set virtual machine hardware and network connectivity 1. Set the number of virtual processors and the to tal memory.
Verify that all NICs are connected. To enable guest cus to mization In the Password Reset section, select Allow local administra to r password. Password au to -generation can be set, in which case the end cus to mer administra to rs must be given the password or a vCloud API mechanism to acquire that password. Alternatively, if the administra to r password is known, select Specify password and provide it. If guest cus to mization is not enabled, the required configuration changes must be made to the operating system running on the virtual machine.
To configure NAT and firewall rules, configure the relevant organization network to which the vApp is connected. To configure NAT and firewall rules 1. In the vCloud user interface, the external IP address is s to red in a list of available addresses and must be present before the NAT rule can be added.
Set the following values as appropriate: External IP. Port external port number. Internal IP. Port internal port number.
Pro to col. Add a firewall rule by specifying the following values: Firewall rule use a unique name. Internal IP of the virtual machine. The external data sources must be available to the virtual machine after they are imported to the vCloud environment.
If such external data sources exist, the transition project team must determine the best way to enable access or transfer the external data sources to an environment that can be made available to the transitioned virtual machine.
The transition project team must assess the impact to the infrastructure DNS, load balancers, routers and switches, and so on , internal operating system settings host files, routes , and applications internal and external to the transitioned virtual machine.
Verify that the vApp is running. Select the vApp, right-click, and select Open. Right-click the virtual machine and select Open Console. If guest cus to mization is in use and the administrative account uses an au to -generated password, view the parameters for the virtual machine on the Guest OS Cus to mization tab to obtain the password.
In this example: a login to the system console was used to ping the Internet IP address: 8. The following example demonstrates logging in to the test virtual machine using SSH. This exercises the inbound NAT and firewall rules. Cleaning Up Lab Manager and S to rage 4. The high-level steps to decommission a Lab Manager environment include: 1.
Decommission Lab Manager s to rage. Decommission Lab Manager networks. Decommission Lab Manager Support infrastructure. Summary Following the procedures described in this document will make the process of transitioning workloads from Lab Manager to vCloud Direc to r smoother and more effective.
If planned and followed carefully, cus to mers will quickly gain all the benefits of delivering IT services in the VMware vCloud Direc to r environment. Acknowledgements VMware Global Technology Solutions and the Services Engineering team would like to thank the VMware Global Center of Excellence team who developed the transition methodology described in this solution whitepaper.
Special thanks to the following COE members: Jason Karnes Mahesh Rajani The usefulness of this solution depends on regular input from the consumers of this paper. Send your feedback to ipfeedback vmware. The system on which the Python script is executed must be able to access the vCloud Direc to r Servers on port It is possible to run the Python script on a vCloud Direc to r Server as long as the required version of Python is installed.
If you require assistance in setting these values, please contact the VMware team member who provided this utility. On the Active Python License Agreement screen, accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
In this example, on the ActivePython Cus to m Setup screen, no changes were made and all default values were used. After ActivePython is installed, click Finish. Launch a Windows cmd or PowerShell window and verify that Python is in the PATH and that the version installed matches the version downloaded and installed in the preceding steps. To do this, type: python —V to get the version number.
If an error occurs, there might be a problem with the PATH environment variable or with the installation. The import.
The previous usage examples assumed running the import. The following screenshot shows a Windows-based system importing a virtual machine in the same way. The virtual machine was successfully imported from the vCenter Server in to the vCloud environment. In both scenarios, the overall configuration setup is the same, which is as follows: A Lab Manager instance with a vCenter Server 4.
Reference source not found.. They then must be copied in to a VMFS5 based datas to re. Parameters such as VM size, network latency, network throughput, and s to rage device capabilities could influence the copy operations, and must be considered for proper migration.
Details of these are beyond the scope of this document. Increased resource limits such as file descrip to rs. Standard 1MB file system block size with support for 2TB virtual disks.
Default use of hardware-assisted locking, also called a to mic test-and-set ATS locking, on s to rage devices that support hardware acceleration. Online in-place upgrade process that upgrades existing datas to res without disrupting hosts or virtual machines that are currently running.
While creating a Provider virtual datacenter, vCloud Direc to r has an option to select whether that container holds a hardware version 7 or a hardware version 8 VM. This option could be leveraged if needed to segregate the workloads for management and operational purposes. All Rights Reserved This is a sample script provided as is.
