To begin with, each of these professions have unique and very successful back grounds. However, over the years the lines between them have become quite blurred.
Some Osteopaths will treat similarly to Chiropractors, and Chiropractors like Physiotherapists and visa versa. Without rehabilitation, even if your rotator cuff is fully healed, chances of you injuring it again are high. This is where physiotherapy comes in.
As a way to speed up the post-surgery recovery, physiotherapists help you rehabilitate the muscles, speeding up the recovery while minimising the atrophy. Physiotherapy uses techniques similar to the other two disciplines, such as massages and stretches.
Physiotherapists believe that injuries are a result of muscular imbalance. Such an imbalance pulls your joints out of alignment, making you vulnerable to injuries. Hence the treatments focus on bringing balance back to the muscular system, strengthening the antagonistic muscles to pull the joints back to their natural position, improving your posture and reducing your chances of injuries.
On the surface, the treatments may seem similar to each other, but each of them has their area of focus that can actually complement each other. In other words, combining the treatments can speed up the recovery process and prevent a relapse. Let us know! Featured image by Jesper Aggergaard on Unsplash.

They have a specialist interest in neck and back pain, but when they assess patients, they take their entire physical, emotional and social well-being into account. Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine.
As well as manual treatment, chiropractors are able to offer a package of care which includes advice on self-help, therapeutic exercises and lifestyle changes.
Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly.
Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. They maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.
The profession helps to encourage development and facilitate recovery, enabling people to stay in work while helping them to remain independent for as long as possible. They work with people of all ages to treat a broad range of health conditions including sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions as well as chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, osteoarthritis , and stroke.
Physiotherapists are involved in the assessment, diagnosis, planning, and management of patient care. Physiotherapists work across a range of health settings including private practices, public and private hospitals, community health centres, residential aged care facilities and sports organisations.
Traditionally, physiotherapy education is generally grounded in evidence-based practice. This is reflected in a generally heavier slant towards electro-therapies such as ultrasound and TENS machine treatment, alongside exercise prescription.
Whilst they do learn basic massage, their manual hands-on application is minimal. The treatment may include manipulation, massage or ergonomic advice. Chiropractors in Australia are a nationally registered and regulated healthcare profession. Chiropractors work in private practice.
Traditionally, Chiropractors have had an almost direct focus on the spine, with their main tool of treatment being spinal joint manipulation, based on the Subluxation Model a joint that is out of alignment will cause nervous system disruption.
Learning of soft tissue treatment is generally self-directed. Want to visit a chiropractor? Book in to see Dr. Guy Finch or Dr. Fadi Habanbou. Traditionally, Osteopathy has been very philosophy focused. Osteopaths rely on the self-healing mechanisms of the body and are bound to treat in this manner. Their education is very hands-on heavy, giving them access to a multitude of treatment options. Want to visit an osteopath?

And here is the dilemma these professions face. Physios and Chiros have attached themselves to something they do, whilst Osteopaths have attached themselves to a way they think.
Like I said earlier, in the real world, there is just good medicine and bad medicine. The good ones are just silently going about their business helping people. Before the speedy internet age, all you had to be was great at what you do. If you mastered your skill and helped people, those people would rant and rave about you and you would be busy. In saying all of this, if you do find a great practitioner that is helping you, trust in them.
See the value not only in that treatment that they are performing, but the years of education they have accumulated to bring you that result.
They will get even better and more efficient at helping you as time progresses and they learn the intricacies of your body.
