What is the difference between netgear wndr3400 and wndr3700

A guest network is useful if you want to offer free Internet access to guests while keeping them from accessing your local resources such as your printer or personal files. This is a great feature for a small cafe or restaurant. We tried it with a few external hard drives and were pleased with how this feature worked, though we wished it were faster.

This means you can just plug in your current external hard drive with data already on it and share it with the rest of the network. The router can also power compact hard drives that are USB bus-powered.

The router supports Windows' SMB protocol, which allows any computer in the network to access its storage using a network browser such as Windows Explorer without having any additional software installed. It also supports Macs and the shares will automatically appear in Finder. The router's only means of restricting access to its storage is via password. Once set, the restriction is applied to anyone wanting to access that folder.

This is a primitive but effective way to manage network storage. Most NAS servers use more advanced restriction protocols via user accounts.

However, considering the fact that this is primarily a router, we were happy with this level of restriction. You can also set up remote connections to access the data via Internet. To do this, however, you will need to use a dynamic DNS service, such as Dyndns. The second feature that we really like about the WNDR is its Traffic Meter, which allows you to control the router's bandwidth. For example, you can set the router to disconnect from the Internet if a certain amount of data has been downloaded or uploaded, or both over a certain period of time.

This is useful when you have a limited quota and don't want to go over. Unfortunately, the Traffic Meter doesn't offer the bandwidth control for individual computers. This means you can't use it to restrict one individual from downloading too much. You can set up this feature by installing the Live Parental Controls setup software from the included CD and it will walk you though the short installation processes.

The width represents the horizontal dimension of the product. We consider a smaller width better because it assures easy maneuverability. Performance 1. A higher maximum Wi-Fi speed results in better performance.

This is measured in megabits per second. Wi-Fi 4 It has faster transfer rates and improved security compared to its predecessors — a, b, and g. Dual-band devices can transmit data quickly on the newest 5GHz band, using recent standards e.

They can also use the older 2. This means that the same query will return a quicker response if repeated from another computer in the same network. The internal storage refers to the built-in storage space available in a device for system data, apps, and user-generated data. With a large amount of internal storage, you can save more files and apps on your device.

Security 1. A network firewall protects a computer network from unauthorized access. This is a security feature in which network access is granted to devices based on their unique MAC address.

We are investigating this as the highest priority and will provide updates at Status. Join Now Log In Help. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. First let me explain I just set up my first wireless network at age NO idea what I am doing but learning best as possible.

Not sure my choice of security is good, but it's what I chose and seems like at least everything works. Windows 7 on all computers, 2 of them 64 bit.

A little late to ask but never discovered the till today. Amazon allows me to swap them out but if their is better hardware in my , I can eat the cost difference. All works well even with the USB to my surprise. Only any of my HD in either OR fail badly, it's like a step frame slide show it stutters so bad. I assume my connections in the router are too slow for HD or my PS3 can't handle it, no idea. If anyone can tell me if I lose anything of quality by "downgrading from the to the , I would love to know?

Also, does the have all the same firmware nightmares I am reading about on my ? Sure hope I get good news here. I LOVE my but never should have spent so much just getting out of the hospital with a heart attack etc.

Thanks for any guidance! Message 1 of Me too. And theoretically the wireless bands are the same. Message 2 of I just want the best range so I can get the proper speed. I will def. You probably best need repeaters for such a distance within a house any modern router can be configured as repeaters Without a repeater, the signal is only good for web surfing but not necessarily media streaming and especially no good for gaming.
