And ice along with enswells to bring down the swelling. MMA is different from boxing in that it includes grappling. And this aspect of fighting involves using the leverage of an opponents limbs and body in order to achieve a submission victory. What we have seen instances in the sport is that when vaseline is being applied to the face. Cornermen have also applied additional vaseline to other parts of the body.
Making it much harder for the opponents to grab a limb and achieve a submission. And so, for this reason, there are very strict rules around what is known as greasing in MMA. Or the illegal application of Vaseline to any part of the body other than the face during a fight. So I think you can now see the very obvious reason for vaseline being a staple in combat sports. No other substance achieves the same results as it does during boxing or MMA fights.
And so for the reason it has continued to be the product of choice for cutmen around the world. So until a product is invented that fulfills all the same qualities as that of Vaseline. It will continue to be the worlds number one selling petroleum jelly.
Hi, I'm Ross, at 40 years plus, I have been involved in the Martial arts for most of my life. For example, UFC fighter Nate Diaz is known for his propensity to get cut both on the cheekbone and eyebrow line in his fights, with his UFC main event ending in a doctor stoppage, to the dismay of the fans. This leads me to the reason for why it is in the best interest of both the fighters and the promoters to prevent cuts to the face through the application of vaseline. The use of vaseline to prevent cuts may seem self explanatory, at least for the fighters.
However, this is only the case in boxing, where the fighter employs their own cutman. But in MMA, cutmen are employed by the promotion. Well in short, the promoter does not want the fight to end in a Doctor Stoppage. Now of course, fight fans typically find doctor stoppages to be an anticlimactic way to end a fight, and will often show their displeasure at the result.
After the ending of UFC , Nate Diaz himself took issue with the stoppage, noting that he has been cut in the same areas in many of his fights. Placing a dab of Vaseline inside a boxer's bloody nose can limit the amount of blood that runs, but repeated punches will often dislodge the Vaseline and cause the nose to continue bleeding. Virtually all governing bodies in boxing allow fighters to have Vaseline on their faces during bouts, although a referee has the discretion to instruct your corner to remove an excess deposit of the substance.
Although you might be tempted to use as much Vaseline as you're able, doing so isn't without its risks. Your opponent's gloves can pick up moderate amounts of Vaseline and if your opponent hits you in the eye with a Vaseline-covered glove, the substance can negatively affect your vision and cause irritation.
